If you’ve never seen that image on the left take a moment and laugh. Do you get it? In case you don’t know Nihilism is the philosophy which takes evolution to its natural conclusion. If mankind is nothing more than the highest of beasts then life has no meaning. Get it now?

Now not everyone in the world is going to come to the conclusion that life is meaningless. In fact a large part of religion in the world is an attempt to come to an answer as to what this life is all about. For some it’s about being at peace with yourself and those around you. Others will say that the purpose of life is to be happy; others seem to think that life is about acquiring as much wealth or power or pleasure that you can in life.

Thankfully for Christians we have not only an answer but a wonderful little book that explores all those other things in life which people seem to think will satisfy them. The book is Ecclesiastes which, in my opinion, was written by Solomon, the wised man who ever lived.

In this book Solomon explores all that life has to offer in an attempt to come up with the ultimate purpose of life. Some of the things that he pursued were wine, women, building projects, wealth, and knowledge. Now if you think that he only gave it a small attempt think again. Solomon was the wealthiest king who ever lived. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines; he had extensive building projects, the most famous of course being the Temple which was truly a marvel to behold.

So in the end what does he say the purpose of life is in the end? “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment with every secret thing, whether good or evil.” That’s it. Fear God and do what he says. Of course we all know that that isn’t always the easiest thing in the world, but that is what we told to do.

Of course if sin had never come into the world things would be a lot easier. The original command was only to not eat from that one tree. That’s it, just don’t eat from it. Sadly though we failed and so now we have lots more things to consider as we live life. The good news though is that we can keep the law by being in Christ. If you are a Christian you have freedom now that you never had before; sure you are going to mess up and make mistakes and sin, but instead of being condemned in our sins, we have forgiveness. Praise God for Jesus and what he’s done for us!
